A beautiful antique oak sewing table, featuring an octagonal top with a hinged lid that opens to reveal an interior storage. Sewing tables of this kind were a fixture of middle and upper class Victorian homes, kept close at hand during a day's needlework and used to store threads, thimbles, scissors, and other small haberdashery items.
The exterior is covered in decorative carving throughout — flowers, baskets of fruit, and laurel sprays worked across the lid and each of the side panels. The lid also bears the inscription Mrs J S Mann, suggesting the piece was either made as a personal gift or commissioned by the owner herself. A lovely piece of history.
A characterful and versatile piece that works particularly well as a side table in a living room or hallway, useful for storing smaller household items. In the bedroom it would make an excellent bedside table, or it could be returned to its original purpose in a craft or sewing room, keeping threads, thimbles, and haberdashery neatly to hand.
